Design-led facilitation and strategy to co-create a First Nations action plan.

Background

The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) identified the need to engage an experienced consultant/s to support the co-creation of an action plan to deliver the objectives of VicHealth’s Future Healthy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people living in Victoria.

Opportunity for futures

Self-determination in relation to health outcomes and action plans that relate to these is a significant change from historically paternalistic approaches to the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Engaging a consortium of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consultants to design and deliver the on-Country immersion and co-create with a group of young First Nations people as a working group was a significant step in working to change this.

Our approach

We used our extensive critical and strategic design expertise to collaborate closely with the working group and VicHealth staff. We applied our skills to synthesise and analyse outcomes from committee meetings, engagements with young mob and community organisations; and a major 2-day immersion on Country, which we played a key role in designing and facilitating.

Using these outcomes we worked with VicHealth to hold open, consensus building conversations with Committee members and VicHealth to co-create a draft action plan and roadmap.
